Sealite Lights Up the Panama Canal with SL125-GPS Lanterns
In December 2005, Sealite was awarded the tender to supply a series of SL125-GPS synchronized 5nm marine lanterns to the Panama Canal Authority.
The canal plays an imperative role in the world shipping trade with over 14,000 ships each year traveling the route. Mariners rely on the Panama Canal for a safe and fast passage between the Gulf of Panama and Pacific Ocean, and the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, rather than having to travel around the southern most tip of South America.
As vessels become larger and more advanced, the need for continuous development of marine navigation aids to meet new environmental conditions and Pilot requirements is imperative. Sealite’s SL125-GPS lanterns utilize the latest advancements in GPS (Global Positioning System) technology to enable port and harbor authorities, such as the Panama Canal Authority, to clearly, safely and efficiently mark channels and entrances.
The SL125-GPS is a microprocessor-based system that has been specifically designed to provide maximum reliability and performance over a wide variety of environmental conditions. Using overhead satellites, each SL125-GPS unit set to the same flash pattern will synchronize to provide a clear outline of the waterway.
Sealite is proud to work with the Panama Canal Authority, who joins a long list of customers benefiting from the synchronized SL125-GPS system - now installed in many parts of the world.
